The first days after a loss are loud. The phone does not stop. Casseroles arrive in other people's dishes. Flowers cover every table, and the cards pile up by the door.
Then, somewhere in the second week, it all goes quiet. The flowers turn brown on the counter. The cards go into a drawer. Everyone else goes back to their lives, and the person who is left sits alone in a house that is suddenly far too still.

Her tree still blooms by the fence every spring, whether or not anyone is ready to see it.

We named ourselves after them, so we never forget who the light is for.
